Redwoods Day 2

Today we did some really cool hikes and saw a lot of wildlife.  We went for a long drive south on 101 down to Prairie Creek Redwoods state park.  We took a detour on the Newton B Drury scenic parkway that led us to the visitors center.  We stopped in for a bit and got some information.  We took a very narrow and dirt road again to get to a hike called Fern canyon.  It was really incredible as it was along a stream and the 5 finger ferns lined the canyon walls.  Jurassic Park 2 did some of its filming here so my movie lover Noah enjoyed that and imagining that Steven Spielberg was in this same spot.  Tim had a little accident as on the trail, we had to walk under a very large fallen tree and Tim came up a little too soon and bumped his head.  I was hoping he would not pass out and he didn't but he got a pretty good bash on his noggin.  The hike was truly spectacular and just gorgeous!  After that we took a picnic lunch to Gold Bluffs Beach.  It was very chilly and windy and impossible to go in the water as the waves were fierce.  It really felt like the rugged Northern coast and we were one of the only people on the beach.  On our drive out of there we saw a heard of elk.  Then we headed up north again and stopped at Klamath river overlook for some whale watching.  We tried from the top of the overlook and couldn't see anything so we hiked down to a lower overlook along the Pacific Coast trail...it was a gorgeous hike with a lot of wildflowers and the ocean right below.  After all that effort, we still could not spot whales so we headed back up to the main overlook...then we saw them!  We saw a mama and her baby frolicking in the ocean below and it was magical!  We headed back to our campground after a stop for some ice cream.  We then hung out and had dinner.  Then we took in a night hike with the ranger at our campground.  We walked along the river trail in the dark...a little scary but adventurous!  It was a fun day here!
