Tucson Trip Day 2

On Day 2 of our trip we left early in the morning for Karchner Caverns which is a little over an hour drive from Tucson. We had reservations for the 9:40 tour. What a beautiful state park! It is fairly new so the exhibits are so nice and the grounds are impeccable. We took a tram up to the cave and then inside we went! So, I have a minor case of claustrophobia so to have those steel doors shut behind me was quite freaky... but I got through it with a lot of praying and deep breathing. My 5 year old and 8 year old girls were a little scared but we just assured them and they were fine. Wow! I was so amazed at this underground world. Huge formations of every kind were everywhere... there was so much to look at. The path was nice and flat and is the only cave that is completely wheelchair accessible. They did this amazing light and music show at the end to display the largest column in the cave. I thought a lot about how incredible it must have been to discover this cave and the pioneer nature of the human spirit. These guys were just amateur cavers and came across this life changing find. How neat to discover something never touched, seen, or walked on. OK so after our tour we had a picnic on the grounds and then back to our camp! No photos of this leg, cameras not allowed in the cave... it will forever be engraved in my mind though!
After the caves, it was back to camp for a little nap and then some imclement weather arrived... our hike in the Catalinas was shortened to a nice 1 mile Nature trail with some rain drops following us and lots of wind too. Back to camp, some bike riding, watched the Amazing Race (go Cowboys!) and then bed! Fun day!
